Bone Broth Joint Health

Bone Broth is made from bare bones and joints of animals and the same nutritional building blocks help strengthen your own skeletal system and joints

Collagen, which is the matrix of protein in bones, tendons, ligaments, and other flexible and connective tissues, is broken down during the simmering process into another protein called gelatin. Gelatin is the reason real bone broth such as Strawman farm gels in the fridge.

Bone broth gives your body the raw building blocks to rebuild your body’s own connective tissue, especially tendons and ligaments.

As well as making available the raw materials for bones and joints, the proteins in bone broth is especially beneficial for rheumatoid arthritis, a painful chronic autoimmune disease marked by painful damage to the tendons and ligaments. One study showed that proteins in bone broth may actually help stop the autoimmune response altogether and found that collagen from broth dramatically improved 60 patients symptoms and four of them had complete remission.

Joint health is also improved by bone broth because of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which is found in bones and is a connective tissue that shows positive effects in reducing joint pain. One of these GAGs, hyaluronic acid, is an effective treatment for osteoarthritis: and there’s evidence that it is beneficial when taken orally. Chondroitin sulfate is another GAG that has performed well in minimizing joint pain and arthritis damage in several studies.

One study compared glucosamine + chondroitin to plain collagen (the type that is found in bone broth) and found that the collagen was more effective than the two supplements together which indicates that consuming bone broth as a whole food helps in ways that the supplements miss.

The combination of GAGs and proteins that are in bone broth are a valuable food, and a way to combat joint diseases and pain. If you are active in activities that place stress on your joints (like jogging or weightlifting) adding bone broth to your diet could prove beneficial.
